အားကစားများ (Games)

          George: Say, Joe, do you play card games?       

          ဂျော့။  ။ ဟေ့၊ ဂျိုး။ မင်း ဖဲ (လူလေးယောက်ကစားရသည့်ဖဲကစားနည်း) ကစားသလားကွ။          

Joe: No, I don't play any card games. But I know how to play chess. How about you, George? 

          ဂျိုး။  ။ နိုး၊ ငါ ဘာဖဲကစားနည်းမှ မကစားဘူး။ ဒါပေမဲ့ ငါ စစ်တုရင် ကစားတတ်တယ်။ မင်းကော၊ ဂျော့။

          George: Well, I happen to be one of the best chess players around.      

          ဂျော့။  ။ အေးကွ။ ငါကတော့ ဒီပတ်၀န်းကျင်က အတော်ဆုံးစစ်တုရင်ကစားသမားတွေအားလုံးထဲမှာ တစ်ယောက်တော့ ဖြစ်နေတယ်ကွ။   

          Joe: O.K. Let's play, then. We'll see who's the best.

          ဂျိုး။  ။ ကောင်းပြီလေ။ ဒါဆို ငါတို့ကစားကြရအောင်။ ဘယ်သူအကောင်းဆုံးလဲ ကြည့်ရတာပေါ့ကွာ။


မှတ်သားဖို့က -

          Say ဟာ အာမေဍိတ်စကားဖြစ်တယ်။ အဓိပ္ပာယ်က 'ဟေ့' လို့ ပြောလိုက်တာပါ။ တစ်ဖက်လူက မိမိစကားကို သတိထားနားလည်လာအောင် အသုံးပြုတဲ့ပုံစံဖြစ်ပါတယ်။ ဥပမာ၊ Say! How about a Chinese meal tonight? (ဟေ့၊ ဒီည တရုတ်အစားအစာဆိုရင်ကော ဘယ်လိုလဲ)

          I know how to play chess. ဆိုတဲ့စကားမှာ know how to ဟာ အီဒီယမ် (idiom) စကားဖြစ်ပြီး be capable of နဲ့ တူပါတယ်။ အဓိပ္ပာယ်က 'လုပ်နိုင်စွမ်းရှိတယ်' ဆိုတာပါပဲ။ ဥပမာ၊ He knows how to drive a car. သူ ကားမောင်းတတ်တယ် (ကားမောင်းတာဘယ်လိုလဲ သူသိတယ်)

          How about you, George? (မင်းကော ဘယ်လိုလဲ၊ ဂျော့) ဆိုတာ Do you play chess, George? နဲ့ အတူတူပါပဲ။ မင်း ဘယ်လိုလဲ စစ်တုရင် ကစားတတ်လားပေါ့။

          One of the best chess players around. ဆိုတာ one of the best chess players in this vicinity လို့ ပြောတာပါ။ ဒီနေရာမှာ around ရဲ့ အဓိပ္ပာယ်က ပတ်ပတ်လည်၊ အနီး၀န်းကျင် လို့ ဆိုလိုတာဖြစ်ပြီး vicinity  ဆိုတာကလည်း အနီး၀န်းကျင်၊ နယ်မြေလို့ အဓိပ္ပာယ်ရပါတယ်။  chess players  ကတော့ နာမ်နှစ်ခု (chess + players)  ပေါင်းစပ်ထား တဲ့ပေါင်းစပ်နာမ်  (compound noun) ဖြစ်ပါတယ်။
